The compact and idyllic town of Ainaži is the birthplace of Latvian seafaring. In the very centre of the cradle is now the Ainaži Maritime School Museum, a witness to the glory of ancient Latvian seafaring. Here, in the classroom, Captain Kristian Dahl, the head of the old maritime school himself, a Swede by nationality, greets museum guests at the blackboard.

When you visit the Ainaži Maritime School Museum, you will understand how ancient sailing ships were built and launched in coastal fishing villages and how our sailors sailed them to the world's far seas and oceans. Maps, plans, seafarers' diplomas, school records, books, photographs, navigational instruments, sailboat-building tools and everyday objects will allow you to feel the spirit of the captain within.

The special feeling that comes over everyone who leaves this small, welcoming museum is one of pride in the Latvian nation's illustrious maritime past and its strong and courageous seafarers.  After visiting the museum, take a walk around Ainaži to breathe in the traces of seafaring throughout the town.
