"Center kiosk" - an outdoor showcase

+1
The restored wooden structure showcase/glass pavilion replicates the Limbaži historical center kiosk, which was installed in the town's Old Town Market Square in 1935. The kiosk was a SHELL gas station, uniquely marking a location in the historical center of the city from which the medieval town was measured.

In the post-war years, the kiosk changed its location multiple times, without leaving the vicinity of the old market square. The exact method of relocating this nearly 4-ton wooden structure is unknown. By the 1970s, the kiosk had lost a crucial element – its tower – and was essentially in an emergency state. At the end of the 1980s, it was decided not to repair the historic building but to build a new one, a replica of the original. The reconstruction project of the kiosk was developed by architects A. Jekalis and I. Jekale at the request of the Limbaži district Press Association agency.

A traffic accident literally destroyed the kiosk. Its lower part was shattered, breaking most of the frame structure.

The reconstruction project of the restored kiosk is based on the study of the historical kiosk’s iconographic material and data from the 1989 project. The tonal solution of the kiosk has been developed respecting the original historical building’s tonal composition – dark plastic details, light base surfaces, and window frames painted in a tone close to white, as well as the 1989 project concept and the color palette approved for the historical buildings in the city.

The kiosk is also perceived as an attractive environmental object. Its volume blends very organically with the architectural environment of the historical center. The octagonal plan and roof shape of the kiosk are a replica of historical styles, with references to the baroque roofs of the city’s tower-like buildings.

Ships, cliffs, people, buildings, landscapes painted in pastel tones—motifs seemingly from fairy tales, reminiscent of Flemish painting… A veiled world emanates from the wall paintings in the attic floor of this house. These were once commissioned by a certain Braunšveigs, about whom little is known, yet thanks to the homeowner's refined taste, his name is often mentioned here. Today, these wall paintings are recognized as a nationally significant art monument. More info ››
