Wall Paintings in the “Old-Town Hall"
Ships, cliffs, people, buildings, landscapes painted in pastel tones—motifs seemingly from fairy tales, reminiscent of Flemish painting… A veiled world emanates from the wall paintings in the attic floor of this house. These were once commissioned by a certain Braunšveigs, about whom little is known, yet thanks to the homeowner's refined taste, his name is often mentioned here. Today, these wall paintings are recognized as a nationally significant art monument.
For centuries, the house of a wealthy Limbaži citizen concealed unique wall paintings. In two halls, several masters showcased their skills—different handwriting and techniques can be observed. The interior of the house is complemented by carpentry works, with door panel carvings reflecting the Rococo era. The impressive mansion of the merchant Braunšveigs was the first two-story masonry building in the city, built after the devastating fire of 1747.
A guided tour of the old Town Hall and a story about how its interior was restored and what was stored in the ancient safe can be learned by booking a tour at the Limbaži Museum.
