Ainaži Seafarers' Cemetery

The Old Sailors' Cemetery of Ainaži historically evolved from the burial places of the shipowners Veide and Miķelsons. The ancestors of these families have been buried in the cemetery since the mid-19th century. Here lie such men as Juris, Andrejs and Otto Veides, Jānis Miķelsons and others. In later years, other sailors, fishermen and their relatives were also buried here. A seventeen-year-old English sailor, Griffith P. Jones, found a lifelong home in Ainaži Cemetery. Under a white marble cross lies the little daughter of sailor Seglenieks, she was born in Jamaica. The extended Estonian Meieri family also lies here. Captain Miķelis Miķelsons and his wife Emilia are now together for life on Ainaži Tomb Hill.
