Pāle Local History Museum
The Pāle Parish Local History Museum (located in Pāle Parish, Kalnakrogs) is a place where you can learn about the history of the Vidzeme Livs. The museum offers insight into the family trees of Vidzeme Liv families, including Ādmīdiņš, Bērziņš, Bisnieks, Lielnors, Feldmanis, Gīze, and others.
The museum's origins date back to 1995 when the exhibition was first created. Today, visitors can explore three exhibition rooms showcasing the history of Pāle and its surroundings, as well as prominent locals, including pastor and the first conductor of the Dikļi Song Festival, Juris (Georgs) Neikens.
There is also an open storage room displaying exhibits from the early 19th century to the late 20th century.
The museum features the exhibition "Vidzeme Livs and Their Descendants", which provides essential information about the Vidzeme Livs. It includes materials from the anthropological research expeditions organized by J. Prīmanis, the director of the University of Latvia's Institute of Anatomy, in 1932 and 1938 in the Vidzeme coastal area (materials from the J. Prīmanis Anatomy Museum). The exhibition also presents an overview of the history of the Vidzeme Liv families, such as Ādmīdiņš, Bērziņš, Bisnieks, Feldmanis, Gīze, Jēkabsons, Kalējs, Kariņš, Lielnors, Pļaviņš, and Zīlemans. Family trees dating back to the 18th century are displayed, tracing descendants up to the present day.
It is now clear that the idea of Livs in Vidzeme becoming extinct in the late 19th century is incorrect. Research in archives and unpublished documents from Orthodox and Lutheran parishes in the region proves that most of these families were large and widespread. Their descendants still live not only in the Svētciems area but throughout Latvia and abroad.
