Bīriņi Castle Walking Trails

+4
The walking trails of Bīriņi Castle lead through and around two estate parks: Priežkalns Park and Mežaparks. Together, they form a large, unified territory of the estate center, which is a rare treasure in Latvia and is passed down to future generations with national protection number 6455.
In the ancient Priežkalns Park, you can view the 18th-century tombs of the estate's owners — a unique architectural monument of Latvia. They were built by Count Mellin, one of the most loved and highly regarded owners of the Bīriņi estate.

Meanwhile, Mežapark was created in 1875 by the builder of the current castle, August von Pistolkors, for his beloved wife, Emīlia.

The walking trails, with the Island of Love, Angel Hill, and the pond system, have been preserved to this day.

You can also enjoy a boat trip on the lakes adjacent to the parks, or explore Mežapark and the surrounding castle area on horseback, in a carriage, or in a sleigh.

The Bīriņi Manor Cemetery was built in 1819 under the guidance of Count Ludwig August Mellin. A hill was used for its construction, with an underground space created and reinforced with a barrel-shaped brick vault. One side of the hill was excavated to create an entrance, which is located between walls made of fieldstones. The aisles and niches were once decorated with lavish oak leaf and flower garlands cast in lime mortar. Currently, the cemetery is owned by the Vidriži Parish of Limbaži Municipality. More info ››
